Let’s talk about grapefruit.
It’s a very polarizing topic. Some people love them, others hate them. The insides range in color from white to red. The flavor can be anywhere between semi-sweet and bitter, sour, or simply astringent. The smell is refreshing, but not everyone likes it. There have been diet plans based off of it. It can have reactions with certain drugs, but has amazing health benefits also. At points in my life I’ve loved it, hated it, and tolerated it. I’ve candied the peel of it and made cookies with it. I have eaten it by itself and in salads. I’ve broiled it and eaten it cold. I’ve tried grapefruit with sugar and with salt. All of this, and I’m still not sure how I feel about it.
At one point in my early career, a friend and I would split a grapefruit daily for a month. We were meticulous about peeling off all the pith. There were times the skin was so tough, we’d just suck out the pulp and throw the skin away. Our section of cubes smelled amazing and clean for that entire month. Eventually, I got a canker sore and we got sick of eating grapefruit and moved on to different things. It was a while before I could eat a grapefruit again.
My kids are not particular fans of grapefruit. They don’t mind it in things like Jelly Belly Jelly Beans, but it’s not the thing they are going to ask for in the store. This made me hesitate for a second before I made this recipes. (It wasn’t the only thing that made me hesitate, let’s be honest. You know how I used to feel about gelatin recipes.) But I have been dying to use my grandma’s Jell-O molds which were sent to me by my aunt.
With summer waning, and the sun going down earlier, it seemed like a good time to introduce some more sunshine into our lives. Enter Sunshine Citrus Cups. With the combination of grapefruit and gelatin what could possibly go wrong?
Absolutely nothing except that they look like brains and may benefit from the addition of oranges and smaller pieces of grapefruit. Which, I guess, is something, but considering how bad it could’ve been hardly counts.
I’m not going to lie, I only ate one of these. The one I ate, though, was refreshing. The unflavored gelatin and ginger ale really let the fruit flavors shine through. The walnuts add a pleasant change of texture. It feels vaguely healthy. It may not help you lose weight in the same way as the grapefruit diet might, but it’s more satisfying. Additionally, it helps prevent scurvy.

Interesting! I love grapefruit and this made me think about trying it, but then I probably would just eat the grapefruit. Love the comment of the brains! Maybe dripping some grenadine over it would make it a fun Halloween treat for kiddos.
That would be hilarious.
I like grapefruit. Despite the looks, this actually seems like something that I might enjoy.
I just think it might be better with oranges. But let me know what you think when you try it.
The comment about the brains made me burst out laughing. However, I’m certain this is very tasty and refreshing.
Speaking of grapefruit, not long ago, I hurriedly picked up half a dozen oranges in the grocery store…only to discover they were actually grapefruit when I got them home. (Don’t ask.) I had a time of it, using them up, because nobody here is a fan of grapefruit.
I could see doing something like that. Sometimes shopping with kids mean that random things end up in my cart.
